My Chosen Genre

The genre I have chosen for my film trailer will be Drama the reason being is because a Drama film depends mostly on in-depth story lines, realistic characters and emotional themes. As well as being in-depth, Drama can include many sub-genres such as Romantic Drama, Comedy-Drama etc, and this allows the project to open up into new levels.

An influential director would be Danny Boyle for films such as Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours. The reason being is because both of these films focus on a certain individual and opens up more and more of their life as the films go on.

Other influential film makers are Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The reason being is because, although they are mostly television based and I am making a film trailer, they have written outstanding comedies which includes both humour and drama. For example, this year an episode of  Derek was released on Channel 4 which is about a learning disabled man who works in an old peoples home, as portrayed by Ricky Gervais. Although many complained about this, Gervais and Merchant were able to bring a comedy edge to a serious subject without mocking it however, the audience connect with the character and as he shows his feelings and emotions towards other characters the show becomes a more touching Drama rather than a mocking comedy.

As well as writing for television, Gervais and Merchant also created a film called 'Cemetery Junction' back in 2010 about three friends spending their days joking, drinking, fighting and chasing girls however Freddie wants to leave their working-class world but cool, charismatic Bruce and lovable loser Snork are happy with life the way it is. This is a good example of what I wish to create due to the lighthearted comedy along with the main drama creating a great story line.
