Reconstruction of a media text, locations.

Due to the music video we are trying to replicate being featured in a fairly cluttered location, we need to find a space/room able enough for us to reenact the setting. Here are the locations we have found so far:
The green room would be a suitable place to film due to being able to digitally replicate the cluttered setting or even setting up posters and other wall decorations behind the cast.

The PE Equipment room is also another good choice for a setting. Although the setting features sports equipment, it will still be effective in replicating the cluttered style.

This is another image from the equipment room, if we used this particular section we would be able to design the setting whereas with the previous image the setting is already there for us to use.

This is the art room. The found objects hanging from the ceiling as well as pictures on the wall and paper, this creates a great grungy setting, effective in portraying the original video. However, the only downside to this room is the tables would be an obstruction and also there nine times out of ten there is someone in the art room.

An empty classroom would be a good place to film due to the chance of easily organising the room and turning it into the 'bedroom' scene. All that is needed is the props and wall decorations.

This is a different classroom but pretty much the same as the previous image.

The theater would be a great place to shoot because there is enough room, the lighting can be altered and it's practically blank. The wall seen here would be a great place because already you see the dark replication of the original video.

Featuring the video in front of the curtain would be difficult in setting up wall decorations, as well as the lighting, the black background would be better.

Production Plan - Diary

24/09 - After deciding what music video we wish to reconstruct (Nirvana - Sliver) and deciding
the roles of our group, we will now begin to find locations where we can begin
             production.

27/09- For simplicity we have decided to remain in college to film our reconstruction. This
meant finding a suitable location to replicate the setting of the original music video.
The choice of locations can be found in this post.

1/10 - We began to film our reconstruction today, which also meant gathered a few props from
around college such as a guitar, baby (a toy from health and social) and also constructing
a drum kit out of boxes and other materials. We decided to film in the green room
because it would be easy to find an image later and place it in the background rather
than completely constructing it ourselves. We managed to film a decent amount of
footage today, giving us more time for editing.

3/10 - Continuing our filming from Monday, we managed to finish everything. We were able to
replicate the camera movements as seen in the original video (not well, but we did it) and
now we are ready to edit next lesson.

4/10 - Before beginning editing today we needed to organise our videos into our own folder on
the computer, but after an error with the camera and dates, the footage was mistakenly
deleted meaning we need to re-shoot a good amount of our footage.

Lunch time we decided to get back together to try and re-create what we had previously

done however with a lack of time we didn't manage to finish. Although, we have created
a second reconstruction of another media text in the little time we had. This media text
is the Diary Milk advertisement featuring the Gorilla on the drums playing along to Phil
           Collins.

5/10 - Today we have got together one last time to film what is missing from our reconstruction.
Luckily we have got everything finished and a little bit of editing was done. The footage
is not great but it has helped us all understand some flaws that may occur when filming
          our main production piece.

8/10 - Beginning our main lesson of editing today and we got a very decent amount of work
done. Syncing the lyrics up with the mouth movements was not as challenge as
suspected, however trimming everything down and working out where everything went
within the video did prove fairly difficult. We gathered the image for the green screen but
it does not look as effective as we had hoped. With the camera moving , therefore the
actors moving, the background is clearly unrealistic as it is perfectly still. Editing is
complete for both the reconstructions and although the Phil Collins was not our original
idea it is certainly our favourite.

15/10- After finalising the original idea of reconstructing the Nirvana video, I decided it would
also be beneficial to edit and fully reconstruct the second media text, the diary milk
advertisement, and after some time editing the sync with the drums have improved
greatly as well as adding in some graphics try and replicate what was seen in the
            original.

Reconstruction of an existing media text

By the 8th October, as a group, replicate 30 secs - 1 min of a media text that has been used for the storyboard exercise over summer by one of the group members.

This should include:

 . Camerawork - Sam Shaw
 . Props - Group Effort
 . Editing - Group Effort
 . Directing - Harley Young

The video chosen to replicate is the song 'Sliver by Nirvana' (Storyboard by Harley Young.)

Influential Media Texts

I have chosen the genre 'Drama' for my film trailer and due to their being various sub-genres and aspects of a drama movie I require audience feedback to be able to get a better understanding of what appeals to the audience. To obtain this data and statistics I will be asking questions in order to create qualitative data with my chosen influential media texts, this way I will know what my target audience prefers and therefore I will be able to meet their expectations more.

Drama's are commonly known for their deep characters and associated stroy-lines. This allows the audience to get to grips with the protagonist and be swept into the world in which they also find themselves in.

As stated before I am a fan of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's work and within two of their most prized shows, The Office and Extras, they have created characters that the audience love and familiarise themselves with.

[EXPLICT] This clip is from 'Extras: The Special' and it features Andy in Celebrity Big Brother. The reason I am influenced by this particular scene is because although Extras is a comedy, it also has it's dramatic moments such as this. Within my film trailer I hope to show aspects such as this to portray different areas to my protagonist and possibly relationships with other characters, similar to Andy and Maggie in Extras.

Two other characters created are David Brent (The Office) and Derek (Derek.) Although completely different they still accomplish the same thing, which is engaging the audiecne. Derek especially does this because, although it is seen as controversial with him having learning difficulties, he is a loving chracters which you notice when a close patient of his at the retirement home passes away.

The reason I find these characters so influential is because the audience become accustomed to their ways and begin to grow a relationship with the on-screen character. Showing a protagonist is a variety of situations and emotions the audience gets a better understanding of what they are really like, sometimes good, sometimes bad.

Another major convention of any film trailer is the soundtrack. With a drama movie the soundtrack needs to capture the emotion of what is being portrayed. Two influential pieces of music that I believe do this are compositions by Ludovico Einaudi:

The first piece is featured in the film 'This Is England.' The composition captures the emotion and portrays a rather depressing scene, which will possibly be portrayed in the film. The reason  I find this soundtrack influential is because the piece is very moving. The soft sound of the piano merely adds to a depressing or slow paced scene, rather than a fast-paced, up-beat soundtrack which would more likely be used in party scenes.

I was influenced by this piece when it was featured in the 'one-off'' TV Drama 'Derek' by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Yet again, similar to the first composition, this can capture the mood and highlight rather upsetting scenes and is generally effective in engaging the audience in the emotions of the character and story line.

I feel in order to create an outstanding Drama movie, it needs to capture a variety of moods the denotations of this piece are that it is a simple piano piece where as it would connote as a rather slow, moving and possibly is more complex and meaningful. These are the reasons why I believe they would go well within my media text.

Audience Key Terms

Qualitative Data

This data requires collection from methods such as; questionnaires, survey as well as feedback given. This would be gained from a specific audience.

Quantitative Data

This information has been collected based around a certain aspect, the statistics are gathered through methods such as tally charts, surveys and experiments.

Demographic Data

This data describes a member of the audience's social status. The demographics are gathered from their social class (SEG,) gender, ethnicity and level of education. This information determines the target audience for a product, helping to present and market the product with the greatest effect.

Psychographic Data

This particular data determines what the qualities of the individual person is, this will include attributes such as attitudes, values, beliefs and opinions. This information adds to the demographics of the target audience, thus having a better effect at reaching the audiences needs.

Skills Development

At the very start of the year, as a preliminary task, I had to create a college magazine to be published among the students. This task was to be done before starting the main AS coursework and to help introduce us to what was expected during our year. From there we then went on to the main brief of my Media Studies Foundation Portfolio. The brief was to create a front page, contents page and a double page spread of a new music magazine. The music magazine I designed had to be consistent in its house style as well as focussing on a specific genre of music. This meant researching into other music magazine, mostly existing ones based around my genre, analysing and adapting the codes and conventions of professional products and applying it to my foundation portfolio work.  For my music magazine I had decided on my demographics being of a similar age to me, 15-24 therefore the S.E.G would be E – C2 and for my Psychographics I aimed my magazine at achievers. The reason being for my target audience choice was because I was creating a magazine that would influence and inspire a younger audience when they’re at the age of wondering what to do with their life, hence why I featured a 16/17 year old as my front cover model. All of this had to be recorded on Blogger.

Before AS Media Studies I had already gained skills at a GCSE level for two years, meaning I had a good understanding of basic terminology and knowledge about the media industry the reason being is because for my GCSE portfolio I had to create a film trailer. The film trailer had to promote the youth of today in a positive way, therefore I gained a good understanding of connotations and denotations of codes and conventions, for example when portraying a ‘bad youth’ the costume used was a hoody, this usually symbolises a suspicious character. Other than that I also had to create an advertisement for a product, the product I had chosen was the ‘Adidas Ball Scrub.’  Within this piece of work I had to learn how to promote a product using media language and techniques, one in particular was my slogan “Don’t just rub your balls, scrub’em!”  Obviously this in a double-entendre but has a great affect at appealing to the target audience, which is what a media products is meant to do. As well as these skills I was also familiar with Adobe Photoshop after using it in not only Media Studies but also Graphic Design as well. This was fortunate because I was already able to create my work and use the software more fluently rather than having to learn the very basics first.

For my foundation portfolio I was required to use Adobe Photoshop in order to create my college magazine and my music magazine. The reason being was because this software would enable me to create pieces of work that would have a professional and effective outcome. Not only that, Photoshop was able to manipulate images such as my front cover model. Like any other professional magazine the front cover model always looks the part, therefore I had to take an amateur Photo and airbrush it to make them look just as good as an everyday music magazine. From the skills I learnt at GCSE I was able to grasp the techniques on how to do so. From the advertisement task at GCSE, I adapted what I learnt in order to make a product appealing to put that knowledge into my college/music magazine, expect more maturely. For example, on the cover lines and features list on the front cover and contents page I needed to create a short appealing line that would entice the audience into reading into the story further.

Over the year my skills have developed massively. Although I was familiar with software such as Photoshop my skills were not of a high standard compared to after the year. Examples of this would be my fluency with the program. Beforehand tasks, such as my preliminary task, would take longer due to having to find the correct tools and then having to slowly use them to complete the task at a decent quality due to not being very familiar with the software whereas after using Photoshop for the year I am able to use shortcuts to get the tool I need as well as knowing how to use each one to create an effective outcome. Photoshop was not the only software I had used in my foundation course. When displaying my planning and research to be posted on my blog, I used a program called Prezi. Prezi is great or creating simple slideshows built with both images and texts and is free to use. I had never heard of Prezi before starting my course, to I had to get used to using it to be able to show my skills within media in a variety of ways. Other developments in my skills would be the use of media language. For the music magazine I had to learn a range of new terminology such as masthead, cover lines, strap line etc. And this knowledge helped to develop areas of my portfolio such as the final evaluation because it gave me a better understand of my product as well as other existing products. Both of these developments shows a move forward because I am, or am beginning to, become literate with the media and technology that surrounds me in my courses. This will become useful in my upcoming Advanced Portfolio.

Altogether throughout my Foundation Portfolio my skills have improved greatly. Compared to my previous GCSE Media Studies course, there is a lot of work involved and more time is required in order to complete a lot of the tasks set throughout the course. It was a necessity that I was organised and able to balance all of my work in order to have a good outcome. As well as this my skills needed to be of a good standard for my final outcome to reflect a professional product.  So overall my skills in generally practical work have improved but also I have developed in my own organisation skills.
